Shortly after 8 o’clock this morning the Virginia Beach Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 1300-block of Eaglewood Drive located in the Redwing section of the city. When the first units arrived, they reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Three people and a dog were home at the time. One of those home was a 65-year old woman who was unable to walk due to a preexisting medical condition. A neighbor rescued the woman from the home along with a pet dog. The other two people home at the time a woman and her 24-year old son were able to make it outside the home on their own. Altogether, four people were displaced by the fire. The 65-year old woman was taken transported to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, the man who rescued her refused treatment.

The occupants of the home were renters who told firefighters that they do not have renter’s insurance. The Red Cross is offering assistance but the VBFD urges everyone who rents to purchase renters’ insurance.

No firefighters were injured in the incident and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
